Adtran 904 Refurbishing Guide

This is a reference guide for refurbishing Adtran 904 series devices.


  1. Device Verification

  2. Ensure device powers on normally.

  3. Observe LEDs for standard boot activity.
  4. Connect to console (CRAFT port) to check current software: show version

  1. Craft Port (DB-9)

  2. Purpose: Low-level management interface.

  3. Connection: DB-9 serial (RS-232)
  4. PC Adapter: DB-9 to USB if needed.
  5. Terminal Settings: Baud rate: 9600 (or 115200 for some firmware) Data bits: 8 Parity: None Stop bits: 1 Flow control: None

  8. Zeroizing
  9. Firmware uploads
  10. Boot troubleshooting

  1. Backup Configuration (Optional)

If there’s an existing config you want to save: copy running-config tftp:///backup.cfg


  1. Zeroize Device

Reset device to factory defaults: system zeroize - Confirm when prompted. - Device may reboot automatically.


  1. Load Firmware

Firmware File: T900E3A-R14-1-1-HA-E.biz

Steps: 1. Setup a TFTP server on your PC with the .biz file in the root folder. 2. Connect to the CRAFT console. 3. Boot firmware via TFTP: boot tftp <TFTP_SERVER_IP> T900E3A-R14-1-1-HA-E.biz 4. Wait several minutes for the device to load the image.

Notes: - Ensure PC and Adtran are on the same subnet. - Some firmware may require renaming (check release notes).


  1. Verify Firmware

After boot: show version - Confirm version matches R14-1-1-HA-E.

  2. Apply minimal config for management (IP, VLANs, passwords).


  1. Testing

  2. Check ports, LEDs, and services.

  3. Run diagnostics if available.
